Who are we?

Based in Montreal, the Experimental Choir of Canada is a collective of experienced singers, composers and conductors with a passion for promoting new Canadian choral music.

Inspired by the C4 Choir in New York, the CEC represents a new way of operating as a choir, with a focus on collaboration and sharing the expertise of each member.

Instead of a single artistic director, the CEC is led by several choral conductors, serving Canadian composers.*

Our Story

Founded by composer and conductor François Lukawecki following Podium 2024, the CEC quickly built up around a core group of artists passionate about contemporary choral music.
Initially focused on readings of in-house works, the choir quickly expanded its mandate by inviting creators from across the country to participate in workshops, recordings and concerts.

Today, with more than 45 active members, the CEC operates in a flexible manner, each one getting involved according to his or her availability.

In October 2025, the ensemble presented the concert D'ici!, highlighting recent, experimental works and several world premieres.
The CEC won the "Prix de la relève" at the 2026 edition of the Gala de l'Alliance chorale du Québec.
He will continue his mission by participating in PODIUM 2026 in Victoria.

The C4 Network

The model of the CEC, a collective of conductors and composers, is inspired by the C4 and C3LA choirs in the United States.

The CEC has benefited from mentorship from these experimental choirs since its inception.

In 2025, it becomes the first international choir to be invited to join the C4 Network, a group of 5 other choirs of the same genre.

The Advisory Board

The CEC is privileged to collaborate with a pan-Canadian advisory board that includes Katerina Gimon, Matthew Emery and Marie-Claire Saindon, among others.
